chimney repointing and cap sealing

I have a brick home built in the late '30s and the chimney needs considerable repointing. Should I use type n or s motar? Also, the cement cap is seeping water (which is why the chimney needs so much work). What is the best way to seal it? Thanks, Hamp.

I would say type N.
