Brick threshold repair

Folks,

I'm a masonry virgin but I think this one might be small enough for me to tackle. I have a brick threshold to a screen porch with a couple of loose bricks. I'd like to reset them before it gets any worse. I think I probably just have to take the loose bricks out, clean off the old mortar, and re-set with some new mortar, right? A bunch of questions:

- how do I remove the old mortar without cracking the bricks?
- what type of mortar should I use?
- it's an old house (1938) and I read somewhere that I need to worry about matching the mortar chemistry to the existing mortar. What's up with that?
- anything else I should watch out for?

Thanks much!

Use a cement chisel to remove the mortar. You might have to replace a few bricks but they are cheap. Use type N mortar mix. I wouldn't try to match anything.
