concrete specs

I'm interested in building a tool shed, not buying a pre-made, but not sure how much concrete to spec in.

Can you give me examples of what would be needed for a 6x6, 8x10, 10x12, and 12x14, shed?

At what point would I need a contractor with a truck vs me with bags of quick crete and mixer?

If I remember correctly, 1 yard of concrete covers 88 sq ft @ 3.5"-4" thick. You can pour the floor either way although mixing up bags can take quite awhile. Generally you can order the concrete without going thru a contractor. Do expect to pay a premium for a partial load of concrete.

So would 4" of concrete work for most sheds?

Concrete

Yes, 4in. will work. At 4 in. thick, 1 yard will cover 81 sq. ft. (12 in/4=3x27=81)

6x6=36/81=.44 yd.
8x10=80/81=.99 yd.
10x12=120/81=1.48 yd.
12x14=168/81=2.07 yd

Hope this helps. Good luck with your project.

But to elaborate on your initial question--you need to specify to a concrete supplier what strength concrete you want. If your tool shed will be used to support a large Bridgeport lathe or milling machine, I suspect 4" of 5-sack mix will be woefully inadequate (prone to cracking, etc.).

And find out what the cut-off point is to avoid a small load charge--you could form up an approach walkway to make up the difference, and save a bunch of money while getting an added benefit.
