Front Concrete Porch

Not sure if this a concrete question or a porch question

Does a front porch require a foundation?
Currently my front porch is a solid mass of concrete, I would like to make it larger, it doesn't support anything basically just a deck, it currently doesn't have any foundation just a large solid concrete pad. What I would like to do is break it up, leave the old concrete there as fill and build a new concrete porch like you would build a floating pad for a shed
only thing is it's about a foot high.

Can it be built like a floating slab, 4" of concrete around the sides and top on top of fill, or does it need a footing?

I am in Southern Ontario

If you're sure it's been floating since its birth, why change things now? Only reason I can think of is if you someday want to install some full-height columns to support a roof that will be tied to the house--then you'd want to put some footings in below the frost line, to avoid the ramifications (aka leaks) of a "hinged roof".

I don't know about Canada but here everything requires a foundation or some footings. I wouldn't build without them.
