Paint/stain mortar

My 20-year-old brick and mortar sidewalk needed some broken bricks replaced and the man who did the repairs used mortar that is considerably whiter than the old mortar, even after I had the old mortar power washed and cleaned with muriatic acid. The older mortar is grey and the newer white, so the mismatch is very, very obvious after two Chicago years have passed. Might a simple solution be to stain the white mortar? If so, suggestions for a product and procedure? I was thinking of buying a black oil-based stain, diluting it and applying by trial-and-error. Help! Thanks.

Stain can work but I wouldn't try black! A latex stain [or even thinned down paint] that is close to the original mortar color should work fine.
