The brick surrounding my fireplace goes from floor to ceiling. I would like to cover it with drywall. I also want to put tile around the opening of the fireplace. How would I attach the drywall and the tile to the brick?

If the brick above the firebox extending to the ceiling is a portion of the chimney, instead of facing, plaster instead of drywalling. (It will probably crack in time due to the heat). If you know that the brick above the firebox is facing, drywall can be glued and screwed in place with adhesive and a few tapicons and drywall squares to hold to it while the adhesive sets OR you can rip the facing off the wall down to the breast with hammer a pry bar. If you don't know which applies either bore a hole through a mortar joint to see if backing exists or hire someone who does know.

Set the tile with thinset after bringing the brick to a plain surface. Attach chicken wire then use cement and sand (1:3).
