Depth for cinder block fence footing

I'm building a 24" high fence made of cinder block in my front yard. I live in Southern California. How deep should the footing be? I've gone down 18" and now I wonder if that is too deep?

Thanks

You could check with your local code authority, but I would think in your area, 12" or less would suffice. You are mainly going down below freeze line, but I don't think it rains in southern California, much less freezes, right?

chandler, your comment about not raining in Southern Cal makes me wonder exactly what, then, could be causing the occasional flash floods, with arroyos running full and houses sliding down steep hillsides. Excess humidity???
