Repairing motar

I am repairing mortar to a small portion of my townhouse.what i would like to do is attach a metal lath then apply s-type mortar.
Which is the best way to attach lath.

If the mortar is soft enough you can use galvanized roofing nails. Use long enough ones to get some hold. If the mortar is too hard use masonry nails. Go into the bed joints -- the horizontal joints. Look for cracks. There is a right and a wrong way to hang metal lath. You should use self-furring diamond mesh lath. Of course the points of the dimples go toward the wall. If you hold the lath horizontally and run your hand up and down it should be harder to go up. That is the right way. If you look closely you will see the difference.
