How Bad is this Crack in the Foundation?
Hi:
I have a hairline crack in a basement foundation wall. The crack is mostly horizontal and is no bigger than 1/16 of an inch. The crack is about 7 feet long. The crack appears in between the cement blocks, where the mortar is. I do not know how long the crack has been there. The cement blocks are 8 inches in depth.
Do I need to do something about this crack? What can I do? Do cracks like this usually lead to big problems?
Thank you for your insight.

How much of the block is below grade? are you sure it's only 8" block? Normal practice is to use 12" block below grade. How old is the house?
I wouldn't be overly concerned about those cracks but would keep an eye on them to make sure they don't grow.

The blocks are entirely underground. I used a basement window as a way to measure the depth of the blocks, and the measurement of the depth of the blocks, at least, around the basement window, was 8 inches. I believe that the house was built in the 1950s or 1960s.

If it helps you sleep better at night, work some (low-modulus) mortar into the cracks with a rubber float. Doing so will fill them, while still having a little "give" to prevent further cracking.
