Tooling Mortar
I have to do some tuckpointing on a brick chimney. How long do you wait before you use your finsishing tool after the mortar is installed? Thanks.

Could be as little as 10-15 min depending on how fast the old mortar and brick suck the water out of the new mortar.. Rule of thumb is when it stands up to pressing a thumb print in it. As long as it's not too wet and makes a mess on the face of the brick. You want the crumbs to just fall away. You'll figure it out with your first few tries. After you tool it, let it sit a few minutes and lightly wipe the crumbs off with a soft brush.

And if you're raking the joints, don't forget to repack the mortar after the last pass with the raking tool. I like to use broad strokes with a long-bristle paint brush, slightly wetted.
