Problem with sinking foundation. Help!

So about a year and change ago, I noticed that the chimney and bricks on one side of the house were pulling away. I talked to a few people and they said the foundation was probably settling. I got a free estimate from a company that supposedly drills down to the bedrock and places haydraulic piers under the foundation and lifts it back up. The estimate was for $9,999. So I have a few questions (please try to answer based on the vague info given);

1. Is this the standard way of raising the house back up?
2. If we don't raise it, will it continue to settle?
3. Does that price seem reasonable for the work involved?
4. Does a structural engineer need to be consulted before proceeding?
5. I assume the brick won't lay back down flush, so is it safe to assume it will have to be removed?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi sgt and welcome to the forum.
First you need to be sure you know what the problem really is and that is where a professional should come in. He or she may also be the one to tell you how it needs to be repaired.

It may just be the chimney that was added improperly, but I certainly can't tell from where I'm sitting. Get someone in there who can be sure, and not just a friend or neighbor.
