window well problem
Eventually this needs to be fixed due to rust-through and resultant loss of structural integrity. Suggestions?

Wow... that's too bad. No easy way around that one.
As difficult as that will be, I think i would be interested in delaying that job as long as possible... and instead look into some sort of coating that a guy could brush or roll onto the interior surface of the metal to make it at least look better. The problem seems to be cosmetic at this point. I suppose someday when it completely rusts out it will be a "structural" problem.
The first thing that comes to mind are the white polyurethane roof coatings, which are waterproof.
I wonder what's causing the terrible corrosion? Almost like there is something in the soil reacting with the galvanizing. Copper or some other dissimilar mineral?

I agree with the other responses. I find it interesting to note that the corrosion doesn't begin until you get about 18 inches down. My guess is that the fill stone under the concrete patio is not reacting with the galvanized metal like the soil under it seems to be.

galvanic action
I think this is caused by galvanic action or electrolysis because the metal window well is connection to the metal window frame and/or rebar in the foundation.
