Question weird slab foundation?

Hi everyone I'm new to the forum
and i have a question about a friends house thats on a slab.
The slab is hollow in the middle and the furnace blows right into it and theres holes cut in the concrete subfloor where the air blows out, there is no duct work in the floor. To me its a very odd setup (and i cant really explain it that well, I'll see if i can get some pictures, i have tried to google "hollow slab floors" but didnt come up with anything)
So i was just wondering if anyone has seen a setup like this? its very odd, my house is on a slab, but i have duck work running in the concrete.

It was common to see this years ago.
Not common any more due to all the mold and moisture issues with it.
Need three things for mold to grow, warmth, moisture, and something for it to eat.
