I'm planning to build a backyard bbq out of brick or concrete block. what would be the best material for linning the inside of the bbq (where the coals go). Would the expense of refractory brick be necessary, or could I get away with red brick? Any considerations on mortar? I plan to use charcoal for the heating medium, and not brickettes or gas.

Purchase or make a lift out iron grate and coal liner. A lift out grate and coal liner can be stored out of the elements when necessary, cleaned conveniently, and may be supported on a brick ledge (standard brick) or steel pins.
