sagging addition
#1
I have a 12 X 12 foot addition with a crawl space on a 100 year old house that was built more recently (70 years?). The addition is now the bathroom and is slowing "falling" off the house. The floor is sloped away from the house, and I think this caused a leak from the base of the toilet that went undetected for several months. Consequently, part of the floor needs replaced due to water damage. The addition has a brick foundation. The bricks are very loose and appear to be sitting on the dirt and I don't see any type of concrete forms under the brick. The property only has a value of about $50,000. (1) Should I tear the whole thing off and start over again, or (2) is it feasible to jack it up and lay a new foundation, or (3) jack it up and support it with pillars/posts?

Probably 1 or 2. If 2 approached 30% of the total valuation consider the bulldozers blade. Your assessment should include a couple of questions at the building department. For example, if you fix or replace the bathroom will the remainder of the house be subject to wiring, plumbing, or any other upgrades. 2 is probably not worthwhile unless you're capable of doing the work yourself.
