Stone veneer to hardiebacker 500 No scrtch coat??

Hi ya'll I'm building a BBQ used metal studs then hardiebacker 500 to cover the exterior prior to application of stone veneer. I've see a few guys on youtube say they put stone veneer directly to hardieback with no scratch coat. Anyone have experience with this ,, also someone explain the necessity of taping all joints prior to application,, thanks in advance ,

Bill

Welcome to the forums! I would use a scratch coat just to ensure adhesion. If it is out in the weather, I would use lath. Anything to keep the rocks from losing adhesion. Durock has tapered edges, and provides cracks for moisture to migrate through. You want to stop all moisture migration possible, as well as make the surface flat again.
