How to repair broken edges of our asphalt driveway ?

We are second owners and driveway probably built in 1993. Not in bad shape overall, but the edges of the 8 foot wide, 2-3 inch thick asphalt are breaking off. Normally we drive in the middle, but UPS or larger vehicles are not so careful.

Too dumb to post a pic but we are rural, red clay soil....and the driveway is elevated on a gravel base, about 6 inches above soil.

How to repair? My first and only thought is to have a licensed contractor cut off the crumbling edges, lay out some treated forms, add gravel and 2-3 inches of new asphalt. Use a tamper or can it be rolled? Forms to stay in ground forever.

We are in Oregon and get freeze/thaw cycles. Was last sealed three years ago.

Having a paver come in and do the patch work will produce the best job but it might be hard to get them to do a small job. Ideally the driveway would be made a little wider, especially where it connects to the road.

If you want to diy, you can buy bags of cold asphalt. Cutting and forming to install concrete might also be an option.

It sounds like your driveway is raised above the surrounding lawn areas. In order to minimize this problem from happening again after you complete the repairs you want to raise the adjacent areas with fill dirt so they are approximately level with the driveway surface. This will help prevent the asphalt from flexing underload. What you mentioned in your first post would certainly be the best way to fix this problem but as mentioned by Mark it may be difficult to find somebody to do the scope of work for you because it's so small. Cold patch will work but it certainly doesn't hold up very well in the long term. If you resort to concrete I would dig a footer and basically poor short retaining walls on each side of the driveway. Concrete put in very thin would be subject to cracking very easily.

define ' big trucks ',,, 10wheel dumps ? tri-axles ? or larger ? they don't have the turning radius of p/u's + the d/w's not designed to accommodate them,,, 2" is inadequate for anything but light traffic like a car & small p/u,,, impo, IF you trim edges, you hasten degradation,,, much less expensive to put in conc replacing bad b-top which, i imagine, is on the inside of radius turns

don't recommend precast conc blocks, plastic, f/g, or cold conc either sooner or later you've got to keep that hvy traffic OFF the d/w

however, if you've got deep pockets, repave it & ease the turning radius while you're at it,,, could also have your guy put in a hvy-duty drive - 6" compact'd granular base, 4" base course, & 2" top,,, that would be sufficient,,, then again, its MUCH less expensive to train drivers

can't imagine any paver working for less than $ 2,500 day minimum altho you might get lucky !
