Chimney Removal
Hope this is in the correct forum.
I will be replacing part of my roof in a few weeks, and while up there I would like to remove the chimney and patch the hole.
My house was built in 1956 - what are the chances of this chimney containing asbestos? This is not, and to the best of my knowledge, was never connected to a fireplace - it’s simply for ventilation.

Ventilation of what? Was it used for flue for water heater or heat system? If it is a brick fireplace, I doubt it would have asbestos in it, but you could always have samples of the mortar tested to make sure.

It currently vents the water heater, but I’m thinking it vented the furnace once upon a time, if not other things. it is red brick above the roof line, and cinder block below. There is some sort of pipe going up the middle. I’ll provide pics soon.

If the chimney currently vents your water heater then it cannot be removed without providing a new exhaust/flue/chimney for your water heater.

Yes, I plan on running a 3” vent up the cavity, out the roof, with a cap. I would prefer, since the WH is on an exterior wall, to vent it out the wall but that is directly under the back porch and I don’t think that’s code.

This is the base. I also hope to put a laundry chute where the chimney was, since it runs beside 2 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms.
