Flagstone patio for outdoo fireplace
I would like to make a flagstone patio in the backyard to put a outdoor fireplace on. Id like to dry-lay the large flat stones a couple inches apart and then have a nice stone paver type border around the flagstone to make it look cleaner. Can anyone give me a basic step by step on what I need to do or point me toward a good tutorial? I have laid a 28ft retaining wall before, but that is really it for my stone work experience. Do I need to lay a gravel and sand base under the flagstones? Should I lay the border first and then the flagstone? I have seen people online just lay a 2 inch level sand base and put the flagstone down on top and hit with rubber hammer…then come back and fill in the gaps and spray it down. Any help would be appreciated.

I've only laid a few flagstone walkways, and set both of them in beds of mortar, infilling with mortar as I proceeded. I didn't use any bedding sand, just placed healthy mortar beds on compacted gravel as I proceeded. Someone with more experience should be along shortly to give you best advice for setting flagstone dry.
