cinder block gate post?

9 blocks high. 2 blocks at each level. 16 inch blocks. Supporting 6 ft by 6 ft chainlink gate.(2 *6 ft gates covering 12 ft driveway). I would drill hole in cinder block to receive gate hinge.

Or should i use steel post and have block pier in front of steel gate post. I plan to stucco cinder block post later. Thanks.

Not a concrete pro, but you will be exerting too much pressure for the walls of a cinder block to hold a gate. It will most likely bust out. I would sink a gate post beside the column to hold the gates, and decorate the block pier any way you wanted.

Not a concrete post. A metal chain link gate post. You could fill the blocks, then drill for an "L" bolt and epoxy it in.

6' gates that swing can put some loads on any post.

How deep do you plan to dig for a stable post that will not deflect and make the gates misaligned and then have closing or appearance problems. 1/4" times 2 posts will reduce the gap between the gates by 1/2".

Thanks for replies. For a cinder block gate post, i would dig down about 3 feet in hard gravel and fill with concrete
With rebar sticking out to anchor blocks. I have 2 ft lengths of railway
Track i might use in hole.

I also have 15 in diameter cedar logs i could use but they rot and diameter gets smaller at top end.
