How do I repair this brick structure? Don't know what to call it.

The brick structure to the left of the picture that is painted ... there are steps in between it and another one on the other side. The bricks are breaking up in spots and falling out in others. What do I need to do in order to patch it
That's the best picture I have right now ... is it enough to see what I can do to repair it?
Thanks for reading my post.

Its a great picture of the shrub and shovel, a close up of the issue with bricks would be very helpful!
Cant really see what is going on!

That sure looks like the brick is failing, likely water has been getting in behind the wall, it was not waterproofed on the back side and the freeze thaw cycle is breaking it up.

Yes the bricks are deteriorating in spots due to the freeze thaw cycle. What is stucco? How does it work?

Once you removed any loose brick/mortar you'd trowel stucco/mortar over the remaining brick to make it even [might require doing the voids first] Some folks call it parging but I think that is the same as stucco.

I checked home depot and lowes for stucco, but I don't see anything listed. Does it go under another name at those stores?

Stucco:

Stucco is usually a mix of sand, Portland cement, lime and water, but may also consist of a proprietary mix of additives including fibers and synthetic acrylics that add strength and flexibility.

Look in the concrete section of the stores. Rapid Set 25 lb. Stucco Patch-71020025 - The Home Depot

Unfortunately that product is not available at the home depot in my city. So I can use mortar as a replacement ... they have the mortar mix at home depot in Ashtabula.

I took some better pictures of the steps so you guys can see what I am dealing with and can give me an idea what must be done to repair it. Thanks.

Oh my ... I didn't anticipate having to replace it. I've never done anything like this before. Say if I replace it with wood. What kind of tools and materials I would need to do this project?
How would I go about doing it? Explain it to me like I was a four year old.
