Brick damage

The bricks on this property are full of holes which seem to be getting bigger at an accelerated rate. Especially, the bricks on corners are increasingly having the corners broken.

Cotton wool like stuff has been found in some of the holes, with eggs in them.

What can cause the brick deterioration? Can it be a pest or poor quality bricks that are getting softer and rapidly deteriorating?

Can anyone shed some light on this? How could this be stopped and fixed?

It would help to know where these brick are. Is it a driveway? Sidewalk? Chimney? Fireplace?

HI - This is all over the external walls of the house and some of the bricks inside the garage. Not the chimney.

Spalling usually indicates that water is being asborbed into the brick... either from the front due to poor mortar or the back side of the brick is getting wet... in either case the damage usually occurs in winter- freezing temperatures will often pop the face off of the brick.
