Mound Appeared in Driveway

I had a new blacktop driveway installed once and a mound like that appeared, the company came back and it was a frigging weed , Could not believe a weed would have enough force to push itself up through 4" of blacktop.
Dig it out , should be easy to patch although you will see the spot.

This is the wrong time of the year for boulder to appear due to frost pushing it up (and I have plenty) . . . . but this is far better than a sink hole !

This is going to sound crazy but it could be a mushroom. Mushrooms will push up mounds in asphalt like that. I have had a few come up in my walkway that looked just like that.

Thanks for the replies. No trees nearby. Closest tree is probably 35' away but there's tons of driveway between this mound and that tree. I'll pull some pavement out and see.

I take a small sledge hammer and pound such things down after the material has gotten warm in the summer sun.
