retaining wall foundation
I am going to make a little retaining wall under the roof that is attached to my garage. Most of the info I've seen recommends digging down and putting a layer of crushed stone for a foundation. You then have to carefully lay each block to get it level and even. Do you see a problem with, instead of crushed stone, laying a treated board down to lay the blocks on? That way they will all line up perfectly. I would make sure to make the substrate even so there will be a minimum of settling over time. My soil is very sandy so drainage is not an issue.

The board does not provide the proper foundation for the wall. You did not say how high or what material is being used but a foundation of compacted limestone is the best, depth depends on the unknown items above!

NO, wood is not a foundation material. There is a reason compacted crushed stone is called out in the instructions.
