Best way to repair or replace these cement blocks on front porch

Hello,
These Concrete Front Porch Step blocks started eroding a few years ago and now they're to the point where they're pretty bad and I need to replace or repair them. I wasn't sure on how to start besides just throwing new blocks in their place. I didn't know if they need some sort of footing perhaps maybe even why they cracked in the first place.

I'm with you, replace them.

Yes, there may be an underlying problem such as an improper footer but are you really willing to open that can of worms. If there is a footer problem it likely will mean removing the steps/porch and redoing it properly. I would chip out the damaged blocks and mortar new ones back in place. At the very end make sure to properly mortar the top joint between the block and concrete slab.

There is a 2" between the first step and the blocks, should I fill that in with something?
