Hi everyone. I'm a novice and appreciate any help. My house has stone veneer around the foundation and I've noticed that a lot of the mortar (I think that's what it's called) has broken off where the stones meet the ground. I've attached two pictures as examples. Bugs and chipmunks have been making homes in these holes so I want to close them up. Do I have to use a concrete mix and patch it or would something like Great Stuff spray work? The holes are maybe two inches deep. I'm a displaced city dweller, so I'm more interested in ease than appearance to limit my chances of messing something up. Like "Masonry for Dummies".

I need to set a 4x4 post with 8' above ground (clothesline). The hole will be 3' deep and about 12" square. The bottom 6" will be 1/2" stone (for water runoff), then 2 1/2' of concrete (about 4 50lb bags). I would like to use Fast-Setting cement, and I read the Quikrete instruction, which said for that depth hole just fill it with concrete and add water. But given the depth am concerned about enough water getting through to the bottom. Yes, they are the manufacturer, but I was wondering if adding water at the mid-point would be a problem ? If anyone that has an experience with Fast-Setting has suggestions, I would appreciate hearing them. Thanks Jack
