Issues with new asphalt driveway

Hello,

I got a new asphalt driveway 9 months ago. After the first winter I started noticing little volcano bumps on the asphalt ( probably weeds, I applied weed killer, than flattened the volcano on a hot day with a 2x4, since the contractor not showing up for a long time) . There are also long cracking along the edging.

What bothers me the most, is the small stone chips all over the driveway. If you look at the image, there are alot of white dots all over, if you look closer those white dots are chipped limestone. Some of it either chipped half way or completely out, creating a small hole. My worry is that during winter these holes will get bigger due to frozen water. Is that a normal normal thing to see that kind of chipping on a new driveway ? Contractor says it's normal wear and tear and agreed to seal coat it. Would seal coating it be good enough?

I added a link to my photos.

Not seeing anything of issue there, looks like it's time to seal the drive!

It should have atop coat put on. Not a sealer! After a top coat is put on you wait at least a year before sealing.

Thanks for the reply. Do all driveways need to have a top coat ? As far as I understand, the process is done in 2 phases. Laying the base gravel and than laying the asphalt mix. Mine is 2" HL3 hot mix asphalt. What happens if there is no top coat ?

A top coat smooths it out, protects is from decay and makes it look good. A sealer will protect it from oil and gas drips, sun, and winter ice and snow.
A sealer should not be applied until after a year.

No, there are a lot of different types/grades of asphalt/blacktop depending on the application. Driveways are typ single coat but who knows what grade of material was used!

You got what you got, as mentioned there doesn't appear to be any issues other than it's time to seal with a good sealer!
