Level and raise the surface of brick fireplace

Hello

I'm redoing my fireplace and the goal is to glue on brick looking like this on existing old brick surface

https://www.lowes.com/pd/General-Sha...ile/1000773838

But before I do it I need to raise the vertical surface of the brick by about 1/2'' so it is leveled with surrounding drywall.

I've worked with mortar before and my pain with it was that it wasn't sticking well to the surface. In another thread I found the suggestion to use 1 to 1/2 to 3 (cement/lime/sand) mix to increase stickiness.

Would it do the trick for my project? A friend of mine also suggested to first apply a thin coat of slush to make surface rough.

I ended up using 1- 1/2-3. Looks all right, seems like holding up.
