Best way to set stepping stones

Hi All,

Recently purchased some 20x20x1 stepping stones (Oldcastle 19.5 in. x 19.5 in. x 1.75 in. White Concrete Step Stone-12052330 - The Home Depot) and planning to place them in a diagonal checkerboard pattern in my backyard (e.g. grass, stone, grass, etc). Wanted to get some suggestions on how to best place these stones when I remove the grass. Do I...
  • Just place these stones on the dirt?
  • Use gravel underneath?
  • Use leveling sand?
  • Something else?
Thanks in advance!

Large paver projects benefit from a good foundation for support and drainage.

A walking path using these type of stones, if the ground is level I probably wouldn't even dig up the grass, just set they down, arrange as needed and eventually the grass will die.

Want to dig up the grass and throw down a shovel of sand/gravel then your good also!

Thanks Marq1. That helps. I'll just ensure that everything is even/level best as possible.
