Mortar type for slate stone

I'll be installing this slate stone kitchen backsplash and I judt had a few questions for those with experience.

Is there a specific type of mortar for this type of tile?

In general is mortar ok on a paint-finished wall? I used Benjamin Moore aura kitchen & bath satin in my kitchen so I just want to make sure it will stick or if it would need to be sanded.

Since the stone is dark I would probably want to use grey or black mortar. I have seen greys in the store but if I needed to go darker just wondering what you had the best experience with.

Thanks for reading guys. Any help is greatly appreciated

I would use thinset with an additive like you would use for setting tile.

Give it a once over with some 60 grit sandpaper, get rid of any gloss and anything that may have splashed up there!

Latex modified thin set is the ticket!
