Discoloration around foundation

Just noticed some discoloration around my foundation (peir and slab) touching my mulch bed. Is this damage or just staining? What do you recommend i do? Thank you!

Looks to be effervescence, when moisture evaporates and leaves behind minerals and salts. A normal occurrence!

In modern construction the foundation below ground level would be damp proofed. Even though there may not be a basement you are trying to keep dry it is still a good idea to keep moisture out of the masonry.

If you want to remove it a pressure washer is easiest. You can also scrub with a stiff bristled brush or wire brush and rinse off with water. Do not use acids as that will also attack the cement.
