Rust stains on Chimney

My house was built in 1983. The previous owners had a wood burning stove. The, uh, thingie on top of the chimney that they installed was badly rusted when I bought the house. I didn't think anything of the rust stains on the chimney at the time, but they have proven to be far more stubborn than I anticipated. I've tried various commercial cleaning compounds, a couple of different types of dilute acid, clorox, elbow grease, products "guaranteed to remove rust stains", no go. First thing you see when you drive up to my house is this big chimney coming out of the roof with a rust colored stain running down the center. Ugh.

I'm new to this forum (first time I've been here, someone on the forum at http://www.klipsch.com suggested I try it), so I don't know what other info you need. Red bricks, white mortor, brown rust stain, aggrevated wife, skinned knuckles.

Help help help.

Thanks,

Ray Garrison
