My daughter and her husband have a fireplace in their home. My son-in-law mentioned to me that there is a powdery substance coming off of the bricks. What might this be, what caused it, is there a doityourself cure?
Is there anyone out there that can give me any answeres to these questions? Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

Thanks
Paul Martin

Powdery substance on bricks

More than likely this is efflorescence. This is a result of soluble salts that exist in the brick and or mortar rising to the surface. You can use a stiff brush to brush away the deposits, water, or a weak muriatic acid/water solution. If you determine to use acids for cleaning the brick, proceed with caution as most recommendations recommend a professional to deal with acids. If you decide to do an acid wash yourself, follow directions carefully and wear protective gear. Many tend to recommend ignoring the efflorescence as it provides character to the brick as it is a natural occurrence and characteristic of brick.
