Unhappy epoxy on brick floor

someone, before we bought this house, put an epoxy sealer on the red brick floors. Chunks of this has come off, leaving a discoloration in the brick. When I had someone come in to wax & polish the floors, he told me there was an epoxy seal on the bricks. The wax would not stick or soak into the brick & restore the coloring. He told me it would have to be removed. How do you remove the epoxy from the brick? Is it a job I could do on my own? Do I have to have a professional?
