cement mix ratio?

I need to mix up some cement I want it thinner can I do this by just adding water till I have the right viscosity I want?
Will this thin concrete still set up in time?
Thanks PS I have never really worked with concrete

What type of project are you doing? You can buy premix masonry cement {mortar} that you just add sand and water to.I use 1 bag {approx 80 lbs} to 17 shovels of sand then add water to your desired consistency-be sure not to make what mason's call "soup" which is nothing more than gray colored water that is too loose to work with,so add your water a little at a time.I also make my own blend of mortar by getting a 5 gal pail, add portland cement to fill the pail halfway and the the other half with mason's lime to 10 shovels of sand.If your laying brick or block, use mortar,if your working with stones, use straight portland cement/sand.Hope this helps.
