faux fireplace

I am looking to install a fireplace of stone. I do not want a true fireplace just something to put gas logs in. The base is what I am mainly concerned with but I would like to take it up to the ceiling just for looks. I know nothing about masonry!!!!

You can install{have a proffessional do this}a vent free gas fireplace and veneer the wall with cultured stone.Cultured stone is very lightweight and to my knowledge would not require any type of reenforced base.Basically you attatch a piece of wire lath to your wall and stick on these stones using a rich mortar mix.Your local masonry supplier should carry a variety of different types of cultured stone.I have always liked working with genuine stone myself but am slowly graduating toward the cultured stone. My lower back is beginning to enjoy working with stone as light as breakfast cereal.Good luck.
