Acid Stain on a cement patio

I'm getting ready to prep a patio for acid staining. Other than the degreasing and etching, are there any other things I should know? Any suggestions are welcome.

Read and follow product directions carefully regarding surface prep and application.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT MATERIALS TO USE TO FILL IN THE SPACE THAT IS CREATED WHEN THE GROUND BELOW THE FRONT AND BACK STAIRS BEGINS TO SINK? I LIVE IN A CLIMATE THAT FREEZES IN THE WINTER AND IS HOT IN THE SUMMER, IF THAT HELPS.:)

crumbling brick

I have an older victorian style home circa 1902 or so. The bricks in the basement are crumbling and there is a constant layer of red dust on the floor. Is there something that can be put over top the bricks to stop this? Do the bricks need to be replaced? There is also wood that has been placed here and there in the basement walls. Is there a reason for this or do you think someone was just shoving wood in instead of replacing broken bricks? Thanks - Mollie
