To tamp or not to tamp

Hello to all,

I'm laying out a brick walkway and had a couple of questions:

1) Is it really necessary to use a compactor for the crushed rock base?

2) Will I need to tamp the sand base or just screed it and lay the bricks on top and then use the plate compactor? I've read different things about that.

3) How do you set the grade? Do you set the grade with the rock base or the sand?

Sorry for such basic questions. I'm trying to save money by doing it myself so for me, this is a huge project.

Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
JimmyZ

1) Yes.

2) Compact the sand base.

3) You set the grade based on the final paved surface. Establish cross slopes for drainage. You should have some reference strings set up around the work area.

This is covered almost every other month in Family Handyman and This Old House magazines. There are also hundreds of books on the topic at the local Barnes & Nobles.
