'97 Mazda Protege

I'm looking at a '97 Mazda Protege w/ auto, 1.5 liter engine and about 50,000 miles. Everthing seems to work. The bottom of engine is oily, but did not drip after my test drive or with the engine idling for about 10 minutes.

The owner said it has had tranny work, but was not more specific.

Anything to look for?

Historically, is this a good car?

I will spend less than 3,000.

Romano

You can bring it to a mechanic for a check for less than $100

The year and mileage sound good for $3k, but I'd be scared by the trans work. Chances are it's still not working quite right. A little oil leakage is not always that big of a deal.

Based on what you've said, I'd wait for another Honda/Toyota/Mazda/Nissan.

If you are not mechanically inclined, take it to a mechanic. Search for my posts in this forum and you'll find one that details stuff to look for on a used car.
