Good small pickup for less than $5,000?

I need to replace my '79 Ford Van and am thinking about a small pickup with an extended cab. I really don't want 4-wheel drive and won't need much power but would like something that has a good reputation for engine and transmission dependability.

How about the Ford Ranger or the small Chev/GMC?

Any suggestions and comments will be appreciated.

Ford ranger is the way to go. They have lasted for years, so its got to tell ya something.

Plus the 2nd gen Chevy s10s (and GMC counter parts) are crap. Ive owned one before, and nothing but problems. Ive read other reviews online, and they seem to but nothing but problems.

BTW, i had the tranny rebuilt twice, before the engine finally blew. Hows that for dependable?

The 1st gen S10s however, are good. The problem their, however, is they are over 15 years old now, so finding one in good shape will be a challenge.
