any ideas as to value ?

I would sell it as is. You could end up not recouping the cost of the alternator with sufficient selling price above the as-is $. Sounds a little well-used, but I'm guessing you could ask $1k as-is and take your best offer. Might even have somebody come along who will plunk down the grand.

Measure it with a micrometer; cut it with an ax.

replacment search not going well so I had the alternator rebuilt 140.00 , now its making expensive noises (not the alternator , sounds like power steering pump ) and the battery wont hold a charge .
spent 160.00 for a weeks car rental .

you probably killed the battery from running the car off of it. Car batteries have thin plates and do not like to be run down
