2002 Ford Explorer XLS
Hello everyone,
Looking at purchasing my first car. I am 18 years old and that car shopping process is just beginning. I like being higher up from the ground when driving so this is why I have been looking at some SUV's. I love the look of the '02 Ford Explorer, especially the XLS model. I have read different things on the '02 Explorer but I wanted some feedback from you guys. If you have any other suggestions on small to mid-size SUV's please do not hesitate to let me know. I am looking "USED" and under $6,000.
Thanks guys, have a great day!

I love Explorers; tow them all the time. Okay, to be fair Ford has sold a lot of them, so that skews the data. Personally I'm not a big Ford fan (although my daughter drives an Escort). FWIW Consumer Reports doesn't exactly give it a glowing recommendation. The engine and driveline in particular get very low marks. The Toyota 4Runner and Nissan Pathfinder get higher marks, but of course they are going to cost more. Before you get too in love with an SUV you might want to give serious consideration of any vehicles getting well below 20mpg; think "$5 a gallon gas".

For the money you're looking to spend even in the current market which is bad for used SUV's you're going to have to deal with high mileage.Ford's aren't that well thought of for that.
You're either looking at a V8 which get's low mpg or a 4 liter six that isn't that powerful.
Strongly suggest you do online research especially Consumer Reports,KBB and Edmund's.Also go to used car sites like Carmax,Autotrader etc as well as dealers in your area to see what $6000 will get you.
If height is what you like maybe a 4x4 F-150 would be better.F-150's are a much more solid truck.

my son's 4 cyl sonama has been a exclent buy since he bought it used in 2002, reasonable milage and very dependable. explorers are poor choises for all of the reasons above, look for something that has a long life span and drive with care.

actually you see Ford Explorers are packed with good design and also it is a great safety stuff, i mean like it fully crash protected form the interior and alos its ride height is adjusted to get going good in rough places, for your son , explorer would be a good choice.
