My weekend camping trip: The Good The Bad and The Ugly...

Everybody has a story. Here's mine for this year. I posted this on FB but I thought some here might like to hear about it.

This weekend my son-in-law and I went on a camping trip to Hamlin State Park near Rochester, NY using our pop-up camper.

The Good: Beautiful weather. Warm but not hot. Able to bicycle and hike or walk the whole park everyday. Great walking along the Lake shore. Lots of people but also many secluded areas also. Great eating (He did all the cooking). Lots of relaxing and drinking beer. And great conversation .

The Bad: On Saturday a group of 5 or 6 just over college age guys take the spot next to ours. From the moment they parked the loud music started and never stopped for nearly 24 hours. Then the drinking started and the constant foul language and very loud noise non-stop. Note, this is considered a family park with many kids of all ages. Being Memorial Day and considering it was just us guys we did not say anything and not knowing any better and not wanting to cause trouble we did not call 911. It's also clearly note at the camp site that 10:00 pm is quite time until 7:00 am next morning. Time went on and nothing changed...11:00pm, 12:00am, 1:00am, 2:00am, 3:00am, 4:00am, 4:30am. It died down only because they got sick and started throwing up every few minutes. Needless to say we did not sleep, nor did any of the neighbors. And yes we asked politely as did others that they keep things toned down. It all fell on deaf ears.

The Ugly: The next morning we got together with several other campers and lodged a formal complaint with the park police (Rangers). They took our complaint and immediately gave notice to the partiers to vacate the park by 11:00 am that morning. As we sat at out camper to make sure it stayed secure I overheard one of the guys say "They'll pay for this." Son-in-law reported this to the park Rangers and the Rangers stayed at the site until they were escorted off the premises. (It was assumed that they were threatening us.) The Rangers told us they will be banned from all New York State Parks for the remainder of the season.

Just a side note. The park rangers told us to never feel embarrass to call 911. The call won't go to the police but get routed directly to the park rangers who in turn will call police if needed.

Anyway, the incident did not take away from our overall enjoyment of the weekend.

Oh, man, I feel your pain. Long ago a group of us hunters were camped on National Forest land. A bunch of drink 'n pukes set up next to us. They made one fatal mistake...they cut a tree down for firewood. rangers charged them $1000 for the tree and $100 for every beer can not in a proper receptacle. They impounded their Lexus until the fines were paid. We just sat back sippin' on our clear liquid and laughed.
