Support posts for a pergola

I'm building a 16x16 pergola out of pine. One side will be attached to the house, the other supported with columns. I plan on staining it so would rather not use 5x5 pt posts and ideally would not want to sink the posts too deep as one post is close to septic. Would pine columns work ok and if so, how should I protect them from rotting?

Hi,
Here is an idea. Install the pressure treated posts and then cover the posts with pine boards, keeping them up from the ground level so they don't wick any moisture and also put a small bevel to the bottom back side so as to cause any water to drip off the front edge.
good luck

jctnr,

Use the PT lumber posts. They will stain just fine.
Untreated posts will rot in short order.
