Question Poly refinishing

Brush marks and bubbles, bubbles, bubbles......how can i get a professional looking finish when applying poly with a brush?

Hi,
I'm not an authority on finishing wood, but when using the Minwax poly finish they tell me to stir in a down and up motion and not to shake the can. They also tell me what type of brush to use. I know that one thing I learned is to lay out my brush strokes maybe 2-3 times , don't over brush, and work so that you don't come back into a section that is dry or worse nearly dry, (makes for a bad looking finish). Try going to www.minwax.com and see if you can get some answers there.
good luck,
Trent

Hey

I have had great luck using a foam applicator, not a brush.

Take care

I always thin my poly with about 25% mineral spirits.
It applies easier, is thinner and won't let bubbles form as easy.
It may take an extra coat, but it's worth it.

to add to other good advice. try holding your brush as vertical as possible on your final pass. this should help....rebel

Have you ever tried Minwax's hand rubbed poly? A few coats of this is what I swear by now. A bit expensive, but it's an amazing product, and I love the hand-rubbed look.

Ry,
I've tried them ALL. If you thin any poly 50-50 you can apply it by hand just like the more expensive stuff.

Really? 50-50 sounds like a plan!

Is it 50 hand rubbed and then 50 real poly? Or 50 real poly and 50 thinner?

Which thinner?

Thanks!

Ryan,

Mineral spirits!
Fisrt, you must stir the semi's or satins real good then quickly pour off what you need/want. This will ensure the flattening particles are well mixed. Then add(mix) the same amount of ms for a hand applied finish(just wiped on, not really rubbed).
give it a try,
fred
