Crown Molding

I am planning to install Crown Molding. i have done this before but I mitered both pieces to fit the corner. I would like to use a coping saw this time. When mitering the piece to be coped is it place against the fence of the miter saw vertical or is it mitered at the angle it will be installed?

Fine Homebuilding, Jan 2003, No. 152 has an entire article on crown molding. Miter the outside joints, cope the inside joints. Coping is easier if you miter at 45 degrees and then cut to the line between the cut face and the molding face. Back cut a little when you cope so only the front edge touches.
