Where can I find some wood for a deep window sill?

Hi all, I'm looking for a solid piece of wood (I'm trying to avoid joining two pieces of wood) for a deeper than usual window sill. The size I need is about 37x13 (inches). Tried the local hardware store and Home Depot/Lowes with no luck...

Anyone know of a place to look in the Kansas City area?

Also, what's the common type of wood used on sills? Oak, Poplar, ect...

Check with your local lumber yards. Usually, one will have a door and window shop and should be able to come up with something.

I guess this must be a egress window , use 3/4 in. veneer plywood and tongue & grove a 1/2 x 3/4 in. edge on the reveal side and ends if you want to cover the end grain. You can make the tongue & grove on a router table

biscuits or dowels

Is there really any reason to prefer dowels over biscuits or vise verse when it comes to joining wood? Shouldn't they each work about the same? Thanks. Glenn

Finished my first REAL project

Well, I finished my first REAL woodworking project this weekend. Don't get me wrong, I've built a lot of stuff before, but not furniture type stuff that you would actually want in your house :). Anyway, I did it after using a lot of input from you guys over the last couple of weeks, and a couple of good books on woodworking:) Links to images are posted below. It may pale in comparison to what most of you pros do, but I'm pretty thrilled with it for a first attempt. It was actually a surprise for my wife. I do have one spot to retouch. On the second shelf I used wood putty on the seam where I joined two pieces of wood. I need to sand all of it off and restain that shelf. That being said, I have a couple of questions derived from my experience in building it: 1)Wood glue leaked out onto the wood from under some seams. I wiped it off, but apparently not well enough. I didn't realize this until I was staining it and saw that the stain was not soaking into the spot. I sanded the spot and reapplied the stain. I could not, however, get the stain as dark in that spot as the rest of the wood. Why? Did I just not sand enough? did the glue soak too deeply into the wood? 2) I had to cut dados by running the wood repeatedly over a regular table saw blade. I am planning on buying a dado blade. Which type would you guys recommend? One that wobbles from side to side, one has has several blades. etc? Or is it best to just cut the groove with a router mounted to a router table? 3) Am I supposed to fill in the small holes over the finishing nails with wood putty? I noticed that the wood putty does not stain very well even though it says it is stainable. The stain always comes out real light on the putty. I used 4d nails so the spots are very small anyway. Let me know what you guy think. Thanks.
