Wood or tile stairs?

Wood or tile stairs?
What makes the best stairs, wood, tile, or else? This is for the inside entry to our split foyer home.
We're going to update our 1970's carpeted stairs to have wooden rails and balisters to match a laminate floor. For the steps, a contractor said he liked using tile for stairs, as it's more resistent to water and hard use than wood.
Would you agree with this? Any pointers for installing stairs in this situation?
thanks,
Mina

I don't have any pointers, but I would agree that the tile would be durable. Only question in my mind would be likelihood of falls on slick tile, since this is an entry there may be wet shoes.
Hope this helps.
