Routers

I am a total amateur and just starting to buy some tools. I would like to buy a router but am a bit confused. I saw a router and router table (together). I assume the router can be detached from the table to be used free hand. Is this correct? and should I actually be buying the router table or would I use it more often free hand. I would be using it for decorative edges on shelves and/or trim.

Start with the router. Build a router table or buy one later on after a need for it develops.

I recommend you buy a Porter Cable 1-1/2 hp and a router table at www.rockler.com

The Porter Cable router has both 1/4" and 1/2" collets, which you will end up using both.

A router alone is a bit harder to work with. a routertable is more user friendly. Although there will be many instances where you can't use the table for the application you're trying to achieve.

Get a Woodhaven catalog. They have a web site also. They have every router accessory you will probably ever need.
