Stringers are laid out using rise/run. Decide how many treads you want. Then # of risers = treads + 1. Measure total vertical height that stairs traverse. Measure total horizontal span of stairs.
Unit rise = total rise/# of risers
Unit run = total run/# of treads.
Using framing square, set stops at rise/run and layout stringer. Layout extra run at bottom and top of stringer which represents floor/landing. You will probably have to drop stringer to account for finish tread thickness (usually, bottom rise is one tread thickness less than the rest).
This is just the very basics. I highly recommend Schuttners book. Be aware of stair codes as they are very strict and failure to comply could be hazardous.
